Tips for Summer Dental Care
This summer, enjoy all the indulgence and fun without making your dental health pay the price. Keep these easy reminders top of mind and your teeth will thank you come fall!
Chapstick with SPF. With the sun shining bright all summer long, it’s important to remember that like your skin, your lips need sunscreen, too. Your lips are prone to sunburns, so it’s important to remember to apply that lip balm when spending long hours outside.
Sweets in moderation. We all know summers are chalked full of barbeques and parties, usually complete with loads of sweets and treats to indulge in. It’s okay to give in to these cravings, but remember that consuming lots of sugary foods means your teeth are more susceptible to plaque buildup and potential cavities. If you’re going to go for the dessert table, try to do it all in one sitting rather than snacking throughout the day. Rinsing your mouth with water and chewing sugarless gum after a meal can help minimize plaque and decay as well.
Wear a mouth guard. Even if the sport is non-contact, it’s a good idea to wear a mouth guard for extra protection against chipping, cracking and hurting your lips and cheeks in case of an accident. You can find these at your local sporting goods store, or ask your dentist if you’re looking for something with a more customized fit.
