What is Teeth Whitening ?

As time goes by our teeth tend to get darker. Mostly discoloration is caused by our lifestyle (smoking, drinking coffee or tea, consuming certain foods that cause staining), and sometimes it could result from certain medical conditions or treatments.

Teeth whitening is the process of reversing the discoloration of the teeth by “whitening” them to a lighter shade, and over the years it has become one of the most requested cosmetic dental procedures by the patients of Dr Shimanovsky. It is especially popular among patients who want to give their smiles an instant new look.

How does teeth whitening work?

The majority of teeth whitening techniques used today make use of products containing an oxidizing agent that is able to spread throughout the tooth enamel and breakdown the buildup of stain deposits in the tooth layers.

In our Oregon City office  we use two types of whitening treatments: Take Home Whitening and In office Whitening.

What happens during the “Take Home” whitening process?

As part of our smile makeover procedures, Dr.Shimanovsky  offers take home teeth whitening. Take home teeth whitening products typically come in a tooth whitening gel which is easily dispensed into a special mouth tray or mouthguard. These trays are made at our office in Oregon City, so that it perfectly fits your teeth. Tooth bleaching gels vary in their strength and usage of take home dental products can vary depending on your needs and the product being used. Some whitening gels are used twice a day for approximately 2 weeks, and others are intended for overnight use for 1-2 weeks. Dr.Shimanovsky will help you determine which solution is the best to match your teeth whitening goals.

What happens during the “In Office” teeth whitening process?

  • A color match of the patient’s teeth will be taken at the beginning of the procedure using a scale model with progressively lightening shades of white. An actual mold of the patient’s teeth will also be taken and will be the basis for the custom-made bleaching trays that the patient will have to wear for the next few days to complete the effect and for touch up bleaching.
  • The “In Office” power whitening gel will be applied directly onto the surface of the teeth to catalyze the whitening process.
  • After the appropriate exposure time for each patient to the power whitening gel, the newly whitened teeth will be rinsed thoroughly .
  • Your dentist will give you post-treatment care instructions, including what to eat and what to avoid during the first 48 hours after the tooth whitening treatment for you to get the best possible results.

What results are expected from teeth whitening?

Treatment results usually depend on the severity of the discoloration, but they will be immediately noticeable by the end of treatment. Typically patient’s existing natural teeth, including those with root canal restorations, can be bleached.  However, dental restorations such as amalgam fillings, dental crowns, and dental veneers will not respond to teeth whitening.

Teeth Whitening Results Last?

The results obtained with a teeth whitening treatment are immediate and will last for many months and even years depending upon the patient. However, as the patient continues to consume coffee, drink wine, eat various types of food, or grow older, the discoloration may gradually return. When this happens, the patient has the option of receiving another “In Office” whitening session in order to achieve the previous results of the whitening treatment or continue to touch up their teeth at home with the “Take Home” whitening products.

For your teeth whitening in our Oregon City office we use only the latest teeth whitening system, which can lighten the color of your teeth to several shades in as little as one hour. We also have several types of treatment options that will fit your every need. If you’re considering teeth whitening please call our office.
