Joins National Movement in Support of
Mercury-Free Dentistry Awareness
During the week of October 22nd through 26th, Aadvanced Dental in Oregon City is proud to join efforts across the country to help increase awareness of the health and environmental dangers of mercury dental fillings. We’ll be dedicating our newsletter, blog entries, social media posts on the Aadvanced Dental Facebook page, articles on various mercury (amalgam) topics and more.
Millions of Americans have silver fillings, or amalgams, to patch cavities in their teeth, but many don’t realize the “silver” amalgam fillings are 50% mercury. A large filling may contain as much mercury as a thermometer. Due to its poisonous nature, mercury can adversely affect the immune, urinary, cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems.
Equally concerning is the effect of mercury on the environment. Once in the environment, dental mercury converts to its even more toxic form: methylmercury and becomes a major source of mercury in the fish people eat. Dental mercury in the environment can cause brain damage and neurological problems, especially for children and unborn babies, and that’s according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Aadvanced Dental, we use a safe and specific amalgam removal protocol when replacing silver amalgam fillings, ensuring all of the removed material is vacuumed up, minimizing the chance of contamination. We also use amalgam traps that separate removed amalgam material from waste water before it is flushed down the drain, which have a removal efficiency of 95%. The traps are then safely disposed by a biohazard removal company.
It is my goal to help consumers understand the health and environmental dangers of mercury dental fillings and the safe alternatives that are available such as bonded ceramics.
